What is Amiodarone?
Amiodarone is a medication that has been approved by the FDA to treat irregular heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.
Amiodarone is also sold under the brand-names Pacerone, Cordarone, and Aratac. It is also frequently prescribed off-label for conditions not approved by the FDA.
In 2005, the FDA issued a warning about the dangerous side effects of Amiodarone. About 17% of patients develop pulmonary toxicity, a severe type of lung damage that is fatal in 10% of cases. Amiodarone can also damage the liver and worsen a patient’s irregular heart rhythm. All of these side effects can be deadly.
